Dorian scale lick

This is written in right hand tab. It is based around the right hand and has the left hand movements on a line by themselves. I can tell you how to pick the strings, and if I wanted to get elaborate I can even tell you how to block the strings. The basic move should be seen as an alternating move with a slide down and back. That gives you four notes. Play the above lick as straight or swing eighth notes. You can experiment on how you phrase it.

Right Hand Tab terminology

  • 2 means second finger picks string.
  • 1 means first finger picks.
  • T means the thumb picks the string.
  • TA says thumb with a pedal.
  • X says do not pick.
  • XA says don't pick but apply A pedal.

The move above can be thought of as a thumb/first finger alterating move, then move up a right hand position and play a first finger/thumb alternate. After the second move of each alternate the thumb or finger plays a half-step slide down and pack. So the sequence goes as follows:

Movement sequence

  • Thumb picks string.
  • First finger picks string.
  • Bar makes half-step slide down.
  • Bar makes half-step slide up.
  • Right hand moves up a position
  • First finger picks string.
  • Thumb picks string.
  • Bar makes half-step slide down.
  • Bar makes half-step slide up.

The lick repeats this basic sequence in two more right hand positions. Learn to move your right hand from position to position. That will give you more options for playing those licks you are looking for....JW
